I like this guy and I think he might like me. I want to ask him to hang out sometime but I don't want to make it seem like I'm asking him out, just in case. I've played it through in my head, and what if he says, "What, like a date?" I do want it to be a date, but I don't know if he does too. Would I sound so amazingly lame, stupid, etc. if I said, "Only if you want it to be." Would that be a bad idea? The conversation is 99.99% likely to be on IM.

Great thing about IM, it is not face to face. You can be embarrassed and not show it (type something else). If you want to hang out with him just ask "You want to hang out" then if he asks "Like a date?" You say "NO!". Just as friends, that what you are. Then when you get him in person, hint at the relationship part or ask qualifying questions. Like: "Do you have a girl? or Do you date?" That will get the conversation going your way. You will be in control of the conversation because you are asking the questions.

Tell him exactly what you feel. Maybe he'll ask "What, like a date?" because he wants it to be a date, but is afraid to tell you. Guys get nervous too and many times will hide their true feelings for fear of getting hurt. Listen to the song "Language of Love" by Dan Fogelberg, it's true and makes a lot of sense. That is, we say and do the opposite of what we feel when it comes to the person we like. Speak your heart and don't be afraid to go after what you want.

Ask him if hed like to go get coffee or something simple. You didnt say the age, so replace coffee with whatever you like.

I am not sure why both men and women are not so straight forward about this. If he says:"what, like a date?" just say yes.

Just talk to the guy, if you like him, ask him... Just friends then invite more people so it wouldn't be like going out...

No its not bad. But I HIGHLY doubt he will say oh like a date.. unless he is a little teeny boy.
