They pose a bigger threat to the environment if put into waste than do paper bags, which decompose. Plastic can be recycled but for the lazy people who just put everything into the garbage, paper is the better option.

Plastic bags are now made to decompose much faster than in years past. They never took "thousands of years", but enviro-whackos never are concerned about the truth.

Anyway, as others have pointed out, there is no need to avoid plastic bags, they can be re-used, and then recycled.

Meanwhile paper bags come from trees, and recycled paper. Recycling paper releases dioxines into the environment.

The BEST solution is to use and re-use cloth or mesh bags. They are sturdy, and if you get into the habit, you can use them for many purchases, not just groceries.

Because plastic bags take thousands of years to biodegrade, and because we deposit so many each year into the environment (trash yards or the oceans) they affect the environment adversely. Basically, in a thousand years there will still be plastic bags from now hanging out in the ground and in the ocean. If you were around then, would you want to deal with that?

Oil is used in the production of plastic bags. So, not only are they a danger to the environment (degrade slowly, harm wildlife), they cost more to produce.

We don't necessarily need to avoid plastic bags. I think they can be re-used more times than paper bags. Of course, if you don't reuse them, paper is biodegradable and plastic is not.

Ultimately, either can be bad.

Because they are not biodegradable. If they end up in a large body of water (like the ocean or great lake) they can be viewed as a food item by wildlife. This can cause death for the animal because it is not digestible.

because you can suffocate in them?

and papers more recycled and recyclable,

but plastic bags take up much less volume and are cheaper to produce, so the argument can go either way...

just remember;
THEY AREN'T TOYS.
