Because life as an adult will suck if you don't have a good grasp of how the world works. It helps you get a fun job that pays well. It helps you understand important political issues so you can figure out who to vote for. It helps you express yourself to other people. It improves your critical thinking skills so that you aren't deceived by Internet scammers, unscrupulous sales people, politicians, or anyone else who wants to take advantage of ignorance.

Basically, an educated person is better prepared to understand, and therefore interact with, the world around them.

An education is certainly important, but it would be silly to think you need to go to school to get an education. Some of the world's most famous minds never even went to school. Human beings have a natural curiosity and instinct to learn, and you don't need school to do it. However, there is a mentality in this country that a diploma and a degree are important somehow. A piece of paper does not make you smarter, but unfortunately, it does help you to get a job. If you really hate school, look into alternatives such as home schooling, or schools like Sudbury Valley: http://www.sudval.org/

So you can learn to spell "why" and "you" *evilgrin*

I really don't even understand how someone could reasonably ask this question, but I will answer the best I can.

I think the easy answer is, you go to school to learn to communicate. Whether that be in the form of language, thought, or knowledge.

Let me put it to you this way; I live in the Washington, DC area and in these parts, if you want a decent job paying well, you need at least a Master's Degree. A B.A. or B.S. doesn't cut it anymore in this DC area. That may apply in your location. Bottom line, the world is becoming more "local" and if you want to compete, you better have the best education you can buy.

There are several reasons to go to school. First to become educated. Second to learn how to deal with people who are not like yourself. Third to learn how to deal with authority figures, much like what you would do when you have a job. Finally to learn how to reason and argue (state your case, not cause a fight).

because if you don't, you re going to end up in a crappy job making 10 thousand dollars a year, which will barely feed you, your two dogs, your three deformed children, or your consistently beaten wife. (not to mention the alcohol addiction)

stay in school, learn calculus, and make it through college.
