I need this for cooking.... Does the bottle actually say white wine, or do I go and buy a clear chardonnay?

A Chardonay is indeed considereed a dry white wine. A receipe will merely call for a dry white(or red as the case may be) and allow you to choose what type of wine you enjoy. Remember this though, do not cook with a cheap wine that you would not normally drink, as that will affect the foods taste. It is always best to cook with what you will be drinking or serving with dinner.

If you enjoy chardonay....do cook with that, although personally I would use an un oaked chardonay if I had one.

Very few wines include the word dry on the label.

Most any white wine will work in cooking but Chardonnay is a fuller wine and can be more fruity, especially those from the USA.

If you are really shooting for an authentic receipe, stick with an un-oaked white from Italy (Soave, pinot grigio) or even a chardonnay from either france or Italy.

I don't think there's any such thing as a clear white wine--most are some variation of yellow. Depending on the recipe, you could probably use chardonnay, or a white table wine, or pinot grigio or sauvignon blanc or a chablis.
