Grace is getting a reward you didn't earn.
Mercy is not getting punishment you did (like getting out of a speeding ticket).

Grace
Explains the concept of actual grace, which is defined in the article as "a supernatural help of God for salutary acts granted in consideration of the merits of Christ." i.e. When you are given the strength to complete a difficult trial or job. Such as when you feel an old sin calling you and through prayer and intercession you are able to say "no" to it.

Sanctifying Grace
Describes the nature and characteristics of sanctifying grace; also treats of "justification", which is the preparation for sanctifying grace. i.e. this type of grace is available only through Christ's intercession. Such as baptism.

Mercy:

Compassionate treatment, especially of those under ones power; clemency.
A disposition to be kind and forgiving: a heart full of mercy.
Something for which to be thankful; a blessing: It was a mercy that no one was hurt.
Alleviation of distress; relief: Taking in the refugees was an act of mercy.
i.e. When you are are asked for a dollar for a hot drink on a cold day and you buy the person a hot meal also. It could also be when you are owed money by a friend but since you know he is having a hard time paying his bills you let it just be forgotten.

Grace could be expressed as "God's Riches at Christ's Expense"
Mercy is the demonstration of help or sacrifice when it is not required or expected. For instance, if I go to a sick friend and clean their house and cook for them and sit with them through an illness, that is mercy.
An example of Grace is that while you and I have faults and weaknesses, and we can never be "perfect", God gives us the opportunity through Jesus to have a relationship with him

Grace is a gift from God. For example, grace enlightens our minds and strengthens our will to do good and to avoid evil. We all need grace, to rise above sin. It helps us to persevere and not give in to temptations.

Mercy, is obtained when we have done wrong and God forgives us.

A man murders your son, he is arrested, and goes to trial. If you were to stand up and ask the judge to release him that would be Mercy. If you take the man into your home and make him part of your family that is Grace.

MERCY compassion, care, and love towards his creation (in general) and his children (Christians).

God is often pictured as a caring parent. God is strong and we are weak...He created us and cares for us.

Psalm 103:13-17 (NKJV)
As a father pities his children,
So the Lord pities those who fear Him.
[14] For He knows our frame;
He remembers that we are dust.
[15] As for man, his days are like grass;
As a flower of the field, so he flourishes.
[16] For the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
And its place remembers it no more.
[17] But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting
On those who fear Him,
And His righteousness to children's children,

We recieve mercy when we know who we really are (proud sinners) and we humble ourselves.

Luke 18:11-14 (NKJV)
The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, 'God, I thank You that I am not like other men--extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. [12] I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.' [13] And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!' [14] I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted."

God cares generally for his creation and show mercy regardless if they know him or not.
Matthew 5:45 (NKJV)
; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.

God has special mercy for those that he chooses and are his children. It is not based on works or deeds, but for His own purpose. All of God's children have a special mercy upon us by God...we have faith and it is not of ourselves, lest we boast.
Romans 9:11-15 (NKJV)
(for the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls), [12] it was said to her, "The older shall serve the younger." [13] As it is written, "Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated."
[14] What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? Certainly not! [15] For He says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion."

Where does belief and faith come from? That's the million dollar question...from God himself.

An everyday example....
Grace: My children have done something very, very bad and they should be punnished severley. Since I'm their parent, I let it go...no punnisment at all...and I declare that they are innocent because some other person paid the price for it. It was just like no crime had ever been done.

We know there was a crime, but it has been taken care of by an innocent person.

Mercy: This one is a little tougher. I have two children...both are boys, both are twins. I decide to show one special love just because I want to. There is really nothing special about either one...One doesn't irritate me more than the other... I just do it because I do. I take care of the other twin boy. I feed him, I love him, I care for him. He would never be able to say that I didn't love him, because I do...but the other twin gets a little extra.
