Scaling & root planing (SRP) is a kind of cleaning where they need to clean below the gumline. Since this isn't the most comfortable cleaning, they get you numb. This cleaning is important because it removes tarter buildup that caused bone loss and peridontial disease. Most patients of SRP don't experience too much pain...mostly just soreness for a day or two. Hope this answers your questions

Its PAINFUL! But necessary sometimes! They clean below the gumline and most of the time it bleeds during the procedure! Plus if your dentist woke up on the wrong side of the bed you're in trouble! Good Luck with that!
