First, I hope you're getting him from a good breeder who really cares about health and temperament. They are usually happy, sweet dogs, but a nasty Boxer can be very dangerous.

Dogs, especially high-energy dogs like Boxers, often steal things and chew them up to get your attention. They love to play and sometimes think that being bad is very funny. He'll hang his head when you yell at him because he knows you are angry, NOT because he understands what he did wrong.

First, keep him in a dog crate anytime you can't supervise him. This also helps with housebreaking. Keep him on a leash at all times and tie the end to your belt so you can supervise and train him. Keep only two dog toys out at any one time. If a dog has too many toys, he will think that everything loose in the house belongs to him. You need to teach him that everything loose in the house belongs to YOU.

They need a lot of attention and exercise. By the time he's six months old, make sure he's getting at least a thirty minute walk every day. When he's full grown, it will have to be a thirty minute strenuous run - but not in the heat of the day! With their pushed-in faces, Boxers can have trouble breathing and cooling themselves. A lot of bad behavior is pent up energy and boredom. They are powerful dogs that need early training before they get too strong for you.

BEFORE you get any dog you should read some great books on training. (Try not to pick books randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also!) These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com

I have 2 Boxers - both unneutered. The 6-year old has always been very mellow and mild-tempered; and the 4-year old is a bulldozer! Both of my boys are wonderful with young children and elderly folks - somehow the boys just seem to sense that they cannot jump and frolic around them! Folks have mentioned neutering to calm Mack; but I'm not sure that's the solution - I think he's just a rambunctios dog and my older fella (Duke) is a calm dog.

Be sure to get a boxer checked for both hip problems and for tumors. A vet I know says that Boxers have the most tumors of any breed that they deal with. Be sure to get it from a good breeder as well, as a good breeder's boxers shoudl have less health issues

I have two!! "Notnot" (Nadia) and "Ali." they are the best dogs I have ever had. Mine are NOT hyper. They are so sweet and laid back, but they are playful upon request. I can take them anywhere They don't shed. They are low maintenance dogs. They get along with people and other dogs. God, I could go on and on...!!! They make me very happy. Cute and funny too.
