A relative is in need of a kidney and has been on the list for 10 years. We have decided to have a family memeber donate since his health is now in danger. What factors will be involved when picking a suitable donor? Blood type? Sex?

Blood type would be a main one and the other person's health as well..they would check to see if they would survive as well.

mostly just blood tyoe and of course the donors physical health. You should defintely get a physical and look into it because getting an organ from a family member is the best place to find a possible blood match!
Good luck!

If it's a relative, that's about the only thing. Blood type would play very little into it because the kidney is a filter for the blood.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

my husband donated one of his kidneys to his mom...blood types must match...you must be in good health....sex doesn't matter. they will also have a doctor/therapist speak with you to see if you are ready mentally. its kind of a rough surgery to recover from. they have to be sure that the donor will be able to function with only 1 kidney...

Tissue matching to minimize rejection.

Testing for infectious disease to make sure
donor doesn't pass disease to recipient.
