It would not be illegal UNLESS there is an actual law in the restaurant's city denying it. However, MOST Dept.'s prohibit us from accepting gratification acts or taking favors. It is regarded as taking advantage of the position. Free meals, discounted items....all of that is SUPPOSED to be turned down. It can result in disciplinary action for the officer(s).

I don't think so. I used to work in a store/ food stop- where we would give police what ever they wanted for free. Sometimes they would pay but if they didn't it was no problem. One of the many reasons we did it was so that uniformed police would come by frequently. We wanted them there to help prevent robbery etc. Plus it's just a nice thing to do!

They're told not to accept it but they do. If you frequented a place that insisted on giving your a 50% discount, would you turn it down? These guys go through real combat potentially every day. They slowly get trumatic stress disorder because they are combat soldiers every time they put that uniform on.

No. Because if it was then I wouldn't get 20% off at all restaurants for working in the mall! I guess that's how it works, because they work for the state or whatever they can eat where they want for a discount. Because I work at the mall, I can eat where I want in the mall for a discount.

No, it's a thank you. Most restaurants have a discount for police officers. I've always thought it was a nice gesture- police officers are generally underpaid for what they do, so it's a nice way to pay them back a little.
