I know of many families who do not allow their children to watch television. They are very serious children.

There are a lot of good shows on PBS and I think my children profited by watching them.

I do not have cable because they would watch too much junk television. They show no interest in network television because there are virtually no good shows and they would rather play video games.

I would suggest that you establish appropriate rules for your family. My feeling is that we all need some down time, some time to be passive, to be entertained and to relieve stress. Also it may be a good idea to use television as a reward. When some amount of work is done, some amount of television can be watched or some amount of video games can be played.

I think video games have overtaken male children and I notice that school success is declining. I think this can be controlled by setting limits. Also there is great concern about products especially junk food being pushed on children. Children don't realize that large corporations are using them to take money from their parents and make money for themselves.

Of coarse I do. I don't let them watch it all day and night but I do let them watch it. I watched tv when i was a kid and so did these parents when they were kids. I think some parents just want to be the best and in this they are harming their children more than anything

when my son was little i didn't let him watch TV bc i wanted him to be more active. when he got to be about 3 i started letting him watching some TV. now i let them all watch TV if they want. most of the time 3 of them would rather play with toys. one of them likes to watch TV. if we didn't have TV i would go crazy. i have 4 kids. the TV is almost always on cartoons but they play and watch TV at the same time. they r learning to multitask. lol

I dont have children but I have a sister that is 11 years younger than me. We let her watch tv, but I will watch it with her onve in a while and decide if she is allowed to watch that show. I will let her watch Nick Jr. and other stuff like that, but Ed, Edd, and Eddy is an absolute no-no, and for some reason she loves that show. So I moniter what she watches and only let her watch what is suitable for her age.

I think that TV on weekdays AFTER their homework is finished and checked for errors is fine. That usually gives them about 1-2 hours before dinner and then maybe another hour before its bed time. So that is about 2-3 hours a day and my kids get straight A's.

My oldest 2 are just not tv watchers. It's not that i wouldn't let them they would just rather play with their friends. My youngest just turned 4 and he likes to watch tv, which I let him do but mostly "good" shows. By that I mean semi educational...Dora, Blue's Clue's, Animal planet, Clifford, Harry and his bucketful of dinosaurs. Of course if one of his brothers will play with him he deserts the tv. I think he will be like the other 2 when he gets old enough to go outside by himself and make some friends in the neighborhood.

I let mine watch tv, but it is the first thing to go when she is on punishment. She watches Disney constantly. I see more and more that she acts like the girls on these shows. The bad thing is, they are all over eighteen playing girls of a younger age. Mine is only 7 acts like she's 16. NOT GOOD.

I have always allowed my kids to watch tv (when they were younger) HOWEVER...I refuse to pay for cable tv (still don't) and we get a whole whopping 5 channels. The tv doesn't get turned on for days at a time. We read or listen to cds.

Hm, enable them watch the channels like Nick Jr. they're very academic. This boy I babysit watches Dora The Explorer 24/7 and knows each and each and every of the words that he knows in English in Spanish! perhaps not the information till they're slightly older, yet at age 6 perhaps?
