The gopel of mathew mark, luke and john were written 30-65 years after the crucifixion. ad 367 new testement books were choosen 337 years after jesus died. The gospel of peter was discovered in 1886 and the gospel of thomas was discovered in 1945. So it was really up to people that had no real connection to any the gospel writters what was put in the bible and discarded. What i liked about the gospel of judas was that he said jesus appeared sometimes as a child sometimes as an older male depending on who he was talking to ,also if jesus requested judas to do this task ,we have all got judas wrong in religious litreture.

So many gospels, not enough room in the bible. The truth is, that there have been many 'new books' discovered for the bible. The only way to be sure they belong is not only by checking the dating of the texts themselves, but also to check whether the actual information contained agrees with the rest of the bible. You see, if it is of god it will not disagree with the scriptures we have. That was part of the problem with the so-called 'lost' books of the apocrypha. They very often contradicted the rest of the scriptures. God never contradicts himself. But consider this, where in the current bible does it say there is a book written by Judas? And why would the words of the one who betrayed Christ be included in the bible? Judas committed suicide BEFORE the outpouring of spirit on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2), he never shared in the spiritual gift of God, he never received the revelation of that gift. So he would not have had much to say on that gift. And he would not be able to contribute much more then the four gospels we have. Therefore it seems most unlikely that his gospel is genuine. But only time will tell for sure.

The Catholic church never had an active campaign to "suppress" any of the books that they decided not to include in the bible. There was no cover up. When the story hit the press a few weeks ago, there were not a bunch of bewildered cardinals in Vatican bemoaning the fact that a hidden book was now "out there".

Careful consideration and prayer was done before deciding what was to be included in the bible. If something did not represent what they believed to be the true teachings of Jesus, they left it out. Anyone can write a story about the Lord, call it a gospel and say it should be taken seriously. Books that were not included in the bible were not actively suppressed, they just were not used.

Clearly the gospel of Judas does not represent Christ and I appreciate that the powers that were back then used their discretion to exclude it from the bible. I think it is reprehensible of the media to try and make the Church out to be an organization that tried to have this story swept under the carpet. So many people want to Catholic bash. If you are going to bash on Catholics, at least do it with facts and not fiction.

I guess that would be asking some of these newspapers to have ethics. Maybe I ask too much?

I'll take a stab, although some would argue that I'm not really a christian.
The catch with any book that purports itself to be scripture is that we have no real way of knowing how accurate the text actually is. Pretty much everything we have dates scores of years after the fact. I've had quite a few discussions over the origin and validity of the Bible and, despite all the "evidence" that goes both ways, faith in Christ is still just that, faith. I doubt that most Christians will accept what I've heard from the gospel of Judas as legitimate, but there is going to be some group out there to grabs onto it and uses it to completely change the way they view Jesus. It's going to be a person by person choice, but the majority is going to say it's all just a bunch of hooey.

It's nothing to worry or give praise about. The book was written long after the biblical Judas was dead and gone.
I believe it was Time magazine that ran a story on it. There is no evidence to suggest that is a relaible work that should be included in the Bible. At best an interesting read, at worst, a man's sad grasp to be included in history.

The faith of the Gnostics have always centered around the "teachings" of Judas. There probably won't be any significant revelations as the beliefs of the Gnostics were well known. The found document is dated hundreds of years after the death of Judas so there is no direct link to him.

Historically its a great find, there is no real theological surprises, although it will be one of the earliest gnostic tomes available.

it is believed to be written by gnostics and not by judas himself.

comparing with the 4 gospels written by matthew, mark, luke and john; including the letters of paul and peter, that "gospel" is not credible because these letters proved otherwise.

that is, the majority of the new testament versus a single vague notes.

It is not new. It is as old but I understand it was written something like 2 to 3 hundred years after the accounts whereas the others were written by eye witnesses.

not positive about the Gospel of Judas. yet i understand people communicate out their neck even as it is composed of Judas. Like he become one of those poor guy. He become one in all Jesus's hand picked disciples. Does all of us ever factor out that he hanged himself after he became Jesus in.
