A child does not really like to learn. We perceive it as learning, when it suddenly starts responding to a neighbour's different language. The child simply observes everything that comes its way , grasps, stores unconsciously in memory, and unconsciously uses its cognitive faculties to co-relate anything it sees. Being used to fresh inputs in early childhood, it pursues only new things and retards from repetitive exercises which is what a school imposes. The transition from learning only new things has to happen very gently and smoothly to also understanding the utility of memorising the learnt items to enhance the 'processor' speed of recognition, co-relating, reasoning etc. If you carefully look at the design of syllabus of primary education, all these things are taken care of.
When these aspects are poorly attended to, SUCH A SCHOOL BREEDS A SCHOOL-HATING-CHILD !

I know of something worse. That would be dropping out of school, only to live a life where you barely make minimum wage at any job you work.

School is a mad man's hell. (public school at least) But at least once it's over you get to make your own decisions. Everything has more purpose because you have chosen it for yourself and you are there by freewill.
