I was on my way to the computer section, I thought I might be helpfull to point out a couple of things. Denominations stake their claim on a set of principals and scripture, often at odds with others and out of proportion with the big picture. The big picture is that Christ satisfied God for us in a manner beyond human understanding, and made God's unmerited favor available to us. Whatever denomination a person finds a calling in, remember it is the love of Christ that gives us whatever we find in God, not human understanding (denominations). This love should also trancsend our always imperfect beliefs and tie us together.
Jesus didnt say, by their customs and rituals you will know my followers, He said by their love for each other you will know.
I would be wary of anyone in any denomination claiming to hold the only way to salvation thru anything other than the love of Christ. We serve and worship God in whatever manner we do in thanks for what was already done for us. Period.
For example- Bill Wilson and Father Dowling- one professing protestant beliefs and one a catholic jesuit, out of simple love paved the way for millions of alcoholics to find sobriety.

I don't know how many denominations there are, but there are lots and lots. As for the second question, I don't think any of the other ones think they are the only ones going to Heaven. Christian denominations are all based on Christianity, so they at least all have the big picture in common. Individuals from denominations might think that, but they don't represent the whole group.

This answer is to: how many of them think they are the only ones going to heaven?

Christians are followers of Jesus or the Christ. As such they follow the teachings of the New Testament of the Bible. As such a Christian that follows the teachings of Christ would know that John 3:16 is correct and that some will be saved that don't even know Christ by name, but follow the intent of his teachings. As such I would have to rate those that think they are the only ones going to heaven as a cult.

This being said, some individuals of most denominations may have a cultish view, but that does not make that denomination a cult.

Disclaimer: My statements that some will be saved that follow Christ teachings without knowing him by name is a belief not held by all Christians. Look at the Christiananswers.net link for more info on this.

According to the census I read in Newsweek beginning of this year, the denom's are getting close to 40,000 (this includes Non-Denoms as well). I'm sure most of the main ones think they are right... Catholic, Baptist, Presb, 7th Day Adv.... The Non-Denoms usually look more towards the person, rather than the denomination.

They are legion.

Christianity began with the Catholic Church, which split into the Western & Eastern Church. Then came the Protestants who 'protested' against the teachings of the Catholic Church (East and West).

Then came the cults and sects, those who decided to 'do their own thing.'

Because "Religion" was not defined when the government granted the people 'freedom of religion,' anyone can start his own 'religion.' Consequently there are even 'religions' that profess to worship the devil!

There are a lot of different ones, but most Christian religions all believe that you have to be saved in order to get to Heaven.

I'm not sure how many varieties of christianity there are, probably many more than people could count since different people worship differently, but they all seem to think they are the ONLY one who has it right
