2) the typical mat helps you stick in place better than on a hardwood floor, where you might slide around if directly on it mainly b/c of the sweat

I do yoga without a mat. I suppose it may be a bit more comfortable when you are lying on your back for some of the poses.

It just makes the session that much more comfortable. Give your bones something soft to rest upon rather than a hard floor.

you're on the floor a lot...it cushions, but also adds grip, so when doing certain poses, you can grip your feet and not slip around (you're usually barefoot for yoga)
