I have a love bird who ive had for almost 10 years and when i got him the guy said he couldn't determine the sex.

females are furthur apart from the male, some people may say that you cant tell until a female has passed an egg or is at least at a mature age, this isnt the case, i have been breeding lovebirds for 5 years now and most are easy to sex, but there are the occasional few that have been a challenge.
If unsure definately dna testing, u say that your lovebird is 10 years old, has your bird laid an egg at all? if it has its a female.

A lovebird would have to be DNA sexed
In DNA sexing, a toe nail is cut gently to when it bleeds, the drop of blood is collected on a dot on a card, and is sent to a lab, you usually get the result in a week.
The test is 99% accurate and is the sfest and humane way to sex a lovebird.
My Goffins cockatoo had this procedure done and she turned ut to be a female

If you've had the bird for 10 years and it hasn't laid an egg it's more than likely it's a male. But you can had a DNA test done to be 100% certain.

...the last answer is the best...with some young birds you may be able to determine sex by looking at them...love birds you'd need a blood test...my friend was convinced she had a male and "he" was sweet until the nest building and egg laying started...hormones and protection
of the cage i guess but she is a terror !!! bites
at anyone that even tries to feed her or change the water...she bites through leather gloves...
...friends males lovebirds that i've met have all been sweet and "holdable" and never bit anyone...

You need to DNA sex it. I've heard that you can tell by it's ribs aswell. Females have their bones further apart from each other than the males because females lay eggs.
To DNA sex birds you just have to pluck four feathers from it's chest and sent them to the laboratory.

Take your bird to the vet and have a blood test done. Your vet should be able to determine the gender of your bird.

If it is duller...then the bird is a girl
If it is colorful...then the bird is a boy
Does he/she seem to tweet more during mating season...then it is a boy.

turn the bird over put your finger between it back legs theres a chest bone if u get your finger between it is boy if not its a girl
