Chocolate contains theobromine. A naturally occurring stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous to dogs.

There is a chamical in chocolate theobromine (spelling?)
that is toxic to dogs.
There is more of this chemical in dark and baking chocolate than in milk chocolate. Many dogs can eat some chocolate and hnot have any sode affects but if they get to much it can be deadly so the best advice is not to give your dog chocolate.
There are many other treats they would rather have anyway.
Like a piece of hot dog or other meat or a dog treat.

Chocolate is highly toxic to dogs. This is because chocolate contains an alkaloid named 'theobromine' which canines cannot break down or metabolize quickly. Once the level of theobromine reaches a certain toxicity, the animal can go into cardiac arrest. Different kinds of chocolate carry different levels, by the way, and depending on the dog's size is how much they can ingest without potential difficulties.

Yes. Chocolate contains caffeine, a stimulant to which dogs are very sensitive. The smaller the dog, the more sensitive it is to this drug. It makes humans jittery and it increases blood pressure et cetera. In dogs, it increases the heart rate as well, often to a level so dangerous that heart attack can result.

Yes! A chemical in Hershy's makes a dog get sick. Even a little chocolate will make a dog sick. So the next time your puppy is begging for a bit of your candy, tell poochy to sit and then give him a treat of his own.

Yes, because chocolate makes dogs sick. If the dog gets too much chocolate, it can kill them.

YES! YES! YES!
I once gave my dog a piece of chocolate and although she loved it - she got sick - when I called the vet - he said that it was a big no-no since it could kill them. He did explain why - but I don't remember. The guilt of potentially killing my dog just overwhelmed me and I blocked out what he was saying.

Are you crazy?? Everyone knows chocolate is bad for animals, it's not even good for humans. You'll kill your dog if you feed it to him. Why would you feed your dog junkfood anyway? Animals that eat badly live alot less than animals that eat healthy. Just stick to dog food and dog treats!!

I have heard that chocolate is "poison" to dogs. I haven't ever researched it myself, but I don't give it to my dog.
