It does sound like a bite, either allergic reaction to bee or other venomous critter, or a dog bite.

If he developes breathing difficulty before you get him in to the vet, you can give him benedryl in emergncy.
One of my dogs was bitten by a Black widow spider, and the vet gave her benedryl via IV, and then daily benedryl for home. she shed all the hair on her face, but made it through...the labored breathing was the biggest danger, as the bite was on her face.

Once upon a time, my dog loved to eat dirt. Every spring after the thaw, she'd go into the garden and come back with dirt in her teeth. One day, a lump started to grow on her face, and when we took her to the vet, we found that she'd bitten a rock (we think) in the dirt and broken a tooth, and that the tooth was infected. The tooth was removed and the swelling went away. Another time, as a puppy, she chewed on a pencil, and the metal on the pencil that holds the eraser on cut her gums and her face swelled up like a balloon. We took her to the vet who gave her something to stave off infection, and it went down after a few days.

Check for broken teeth, and make sure he's not chewing on anything he shouldn't!

It is possibly an allergic reaction. If you cannot get him to the vet immediately, it is perfectly OK to give your dog some liquid children's Benadryl. This should bring the swelling down immediately. How much to give depends on the weight of your dog. Unless it's a very small dog, about half the recommended children's dose sshould do the trick, less if it is a small dog. But get your dog to a vet ASAP.

One of my pups had exactly the same allergic reaction to his rabies vaccine. The Benadryl was the vet/breeder's instruction and it worked perfectly.

Spider bite or bee sting is the most likely. Make sure the swelling doesn't get worse - the allergy could cause him to die if his throat swells up. Take him to a vet.

May have got bee stings or something. Look at the ingredients in his food and try another food without those in it.

Try to keep him indoors for a while if possible or keep an eye on him outdoors.

check his face for open wounds and buy animal healing cream if you see any blood or open wounds.

My dog has this problem with her feet. We sometimes put socks on her paws to make sure when she goes out that they don't worsen.

Yep, snakes will do that to your dog. Take him to the vet. Try giving him milk and see if that works. I think my husband told me to give our dog milk if he ever got bitten by a snake. But all in all, contact your vet. She might recommend something over the counter.

Did someone kick your dog in the face? Sounds like he suffered some sort of trauma. Definetly take him to the vet. Time is of the essence!

Check for bee stings, while you are looking for bites. It sounds like some kind of allergic reaction.

Carefully examine his face to see if there are any bites, scratches or cuts. If there are I would take him to the vet.
