1) Get on a written budget and use cash instead of credit.
2) Take on an extra job or two.
3) Sell something.
Don't declare bankruptcy. Don't get a debt consolidation loan.

When you have the ability to pay, make arrangements with the companies. I don't know if this varies from state to state, but in the state I live in, your negative history falls off every seven years. So, if you have upaid debt reported on there, it will disappear. You can also look at finding a financial advisor to assist you with credit repair.
Look up the name Suze Orman online.. She's a great financial advisor who has her own tv show, books and website. She may have a wealth of accessible info for you.. Best wishes to you..

Scott C's answer gets my vote (Don't declare bankruptcy, but get on it!). I was in debt, and it was hard to take ownership and actually try to pay it down. I used to not even look at my bills anymore... but you can do it!
(link below is to a documentary on Canada's CBC that is tracking people who are in debt, and helping them get out of it)
