I once read a poem that seemed to sum this up:
"Not from his head to lord above him, Not from his feet to be trampled on or underneath him, Not from his front to be before him, nor from his back to be behind him, But from his rib to walk beside him, under his arm to be protected by him, and near his heart to be loved by him." It went something like this. Please forgive it was so many years ago.

The fact that the rib was used is an indication of equality. The rib is on the side of the body - indicating that man and woman are to be side-by-side and equal. A man and a woman make a whole.

The ribs protect the heart and the lungs. Vitally important organs.
I think it symbolizes that a man both makes himself vulnerable and offers his protection in a relationship.

This is not a religious question nor is it one that you have to make because of your faith. You can have a meaningful equal relationship by finding a person with whom your personality "clicks" - someone that you treat with as much dignity, respect and loyalty that you give yourself - and that person treats you in the same manner. Its merely a question about personalities.
