Course rating is the score that a scratch golfer should average on that course. Slope is a factor that takes obstacles into account that effect bogey golfers more than scratch golfers. For example a water hazard on a 140 yard par 3 will effect a bogey golfer a heck of a lot more than it will effect a scratch golfer. Does that help? Go to USGA.org for a more detailed answer.

rating and slope are decided by : This area NCGA Northern Cal Golf Association is the group in charge. They send 6 to 8 golfers to play 36 holes on the golf course. The golfers answer a bunch of questions. they take that data and come out with the rating and slope

rating - is what par should be on the course. So if par is 72 and rating is 70 to have a 0 handicap you need to shot 70

slope - this is the system that is supposed to even out golf courses. Pebble Beach and you local golf course. A person who is a 15 at your local course is not the same as a person who plays Pebble Beach with a 15. The slope rating and charts may alow one to get 18 storkes at Pebble Beach and the other person to get 12 storkes playing your local course.

I hope that helps clear as mud
