She is a cockatiel, about 15 years old. She's done this before, and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason why or when. She will go all night without any droppings, and then when I'm at work, she'll "hold it" for the entire 8 hours. It's to the point that I have to go home on my lunch break to get her out so it won't be as hard for her to pass droppings once I come home in the evening. She'll have regular, normal droppings when she's outside of her cage - every 15 minutes or so, just like she's supposed to. She did this a year or so ago, and went back to normal on her own, but it greatly concerns me when she's in one of her phases. In the past, she got to where she would hold it so long, she had trouble passing a dropping, and I had to massage her stomach to "help." I keep her cage clean, and she always has fresh food and water. The fact that it's totally random makes me think it's mental. Anyone had an experience with this? Any knowledgable suggestions would be appreciated.

Do NOT make rude comments about the subject of the question. My bird has a problem and I'm seeking someone who might have seen this before and might can help. Only answer if you actually have an answer or suggestion. I do not want your opinions on how strange a constipated bird is.

Try millet sprays that works for my Amazon. I only give her about a fourth of a spray. Raw sliced almonds work great too.

This is for Nakul: You're a lamer! I hope a bird poops on you!

IF she won't go in her cage, hold her over the garbage can when you get her out and she needs to poop! We used to do this with our cockatiels. I got the idea from a Show on PBS called 'Look who's talking' a show about birds, parrots mostly. It is a heartwarming show. Bird lovers will particularly enjoy it! One of the women on the show held a napkin under her birds bottom and the bird went!

This has nothing to do with constipation. She wouldn't be able to go at all then. The fact that she has normal droppings outside of her cage suggests that she's upset about something.
When she's in the cage, she knows you're going to leave her - right? Whether it's to go to bed, or to work.
She's just darn smart - so why don't you leave her out all the time, or isn't it safe?
I've had cockatiels and parakeets, and when they were old enough to know when they were supposed to be in their cages, they would do anything to stay out. So I left them out. I only had one at a time. But my cockatiel used to sleep on the pillow next to mine - took showers with me, sat on my shoulder etc.

It could be the food u r giving her. just update ur question and I'll tell u if it's okay. but some things I've used are to just put her in the cage right when she wags her tail. You could also associate something bad with her going, like putting her in her cage and ignoring her for a little bit. But NEVER put her somewhere she's afraid of, cuz she'll associate it with you. Another thing you could do is to say a word that you want her to say to tell you she's going right before she goes, like drop or potty. Over time she'll learn to say it right before she goes. Lastly, you could wait until she wags her tail like she's about to go, and put her going in place that's okay with you for dropping, so she'll associate it with the "toilet". But make sure you take her off right after she goes.

Nevermind the idiots that are replying to your perfectly sensible question.

He may be dehydrated which causes constipation, so if it seems like the water isnt going any where you should take her to the vet, I think in any case you should take her to the vet. She may..just like to poop around you..if I understand your question right? I know it sounds odd, but it may be just the same as when they throw up on you. Just a little , "I love you" I really don't know so I would take her to the vet...my cockatiel is only 1 so we haven't gotten to that point. :P

bypass to a craft position like Michaels and look on the trailing silk vines of their silk plant branch. For no longer a lot money you could change the flora, foliage, and "look" of the silk vine trailing its way around the poultry cage. Plus, Michael's always has a astounding coupon in its Sunday paper supplement!

I haven't seen anything like this, and I feel bad for ya. I'd try giving her more water.
