Christians are to Tithe which extends from their Jewish roots. Tithing is giving 10% of all you have/earn ot the church/synagog. From there the Church cares for the poor and needy. In addition there are free will offerings expected of those who are successful.

I am a Souther Baptist, and although we are not required to donate to the poor it is greatly encouraged. The Bible does say that the Lord wants us to share what we have, but noone ever tells that that we have to.

This is something that should flow out of our love for Christ.
Some think that things like tithing are compulsory, but it is a way to show our love and compassion.
