There are lots of ways to cut costs on your wedding day, just keep your eyes open. One of the things that really helped me was joining a couple of Yahoo groups. I know that sounds odd but the women there had so many ideas on how to do thing cheaply. Then you can think of other things like using cheaper flowers or cutting the guest list or other little tricks.
I also hand-made a lot of things for my wedding. My husband and I decided on a Japanese theme, and I folded all of the favors myself - they were origami flowers attached to chopsticks. They worked out to I think 55 cents per guest. I hand made the invitations as well - they were pretty elaborate but even cheaper, you can use templates that they sell at office supply stores and print your own invitations. We used postcards as response cards to save on postage (when you are inviting 300 people it really helps to use cheaper stamps).
When it came to my dress, I got lucky and the one I was in love with was fairly inexpensive, and then I found my tiara and accessories in Chinatown. I think as long as you start planning early you will be able to keep your eyes open for bargains. Use the internet and E-Bay.
Also, it might be helpful to have a theme. Things like paper lanterns and paper favors probably would have been cheesy or looked cheap if it hadn't been for the Japanese theme. I hope that helps, also I have tons of ideas from helping friends plan their weddings and if you ever need any advice or more help you can e-mail me at ykokorocks@yahoo.com - good luck!

"like a cheap glass bowl from AC Moore or Joanne's (50 cents to 1.00 each) add water and cheap gold fish." How cruel!!
Basically, spend money where you need it. Remember that guests won't notice if the tablecloth was linen, polyester, or cotton. Guests won't notice if you had the upgraded chair covers. Guests won't care if there are a ton of flowers. Guests won't care about elaborate centerpieces. And, none of this will matter when you look back on your 25 year anniversary.
Spend money where it's important. Food. Wine. Photographer. DJ (to a point). Location (if needbe). Umbrellas for the guests if it will be hot or raining.
Simplicity = elegance if it's done right. A single rose can be more moving than a bouquet. You have red. Your fiance has white. Put them in a vase and have the parents hand each of you a pink rose. Have bud vases as centerpeices with 3 roses - white, red, and pink.
Having a few bottles of wine on the table and a signature cocktail available is cheaper than an open bar and should keep guests satisfied.
Feeding good food to 50 people is more elegant than serving crappy food to 150. Decrease your guest list and have more money to play elsewhere.
Location - rather than spend money on a crappy conference room in a hotel, find someplace unique like a B&B, a park along the ocean, or a winery.
Good luck to you!

There are a lot of ways to cut your cost. You can purchase a lot of items in bulk, i.e. guest gifts. You could get a free catalog from Oriental Trading Co and that could help. You can use unconventional center pieces, like a cheap glass bowl from AC Moore or Joanne's (50 cents to 1.00 each) add water and cheap gold fish. etc. Make a lot of the items your self. If you do a beach wedding like someone mentioned you could cut costs on your wedding dress. Like wear a cute white sun dress (plus it's something that you could wear again).
It's not cruel to the goldfish. If you have lots of children attending the wedding and you want to give out gifts, the fish are given to the kids as presents. This helps to decrease the cost of more expensive gifts for the adults attending.

for our wedding we have decided to have a wedding with a BBQ on the beach (instead of a pricey wedding &reception). For the invitations I am making them with one of the kits from Michael's Arts & Crafts (they have a good varitey to choose from) Also you could make your own bouquets. B/c we are having a tropical theme, I am going to Party City to get decorations and paperware (balloons, paper china, nakpins, etc..). Also b/c I like making candy I found "palm tree" candy molds and I am making chocolate lollipop palm trees as a favors. I found that this was not only cheaper but b/c both of our family's have a good amount of children; the children would be able to attend as well. Just a few suggestions. Good luck!!

Get real. You can't build a $2M home for $250K. You can't drink fine wine for the price of Mad Dog. You can't drive a Lexus with a Neon budget. Adjust your attitude.
