please ignore the idiots who have given you those silly answers,
i think your problem stems from a display setting
go to start>control panel>display properties>settings, and you will have a box with a slider for resolutuion,a drop down box for colour and a advanced box for more options
if you have a 15 inch monitor..try this
set resolution at 800x600
colour quality medium 16bit
then go to advanced and then monitor and set refresh rate at the lowest(probally 60hz),and then try each setting one by one going up,if the screen stays black, dont worry,it will return to the previuos setting after 15 seconds
if you have a 17 or 19 inch monitor
set resolution at 1024x768
colour quality high 32bit
same as before, try all your monitor refresh rates, going up one by one, until you get the best quality
also you should download the latest display drivers for your graphic card(you can find the name of your card on the settings screen were you change the resolution, its next to the name of your monitor
here are the quick links for the driver update sites
nvidia drivers:http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp
ati:https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&folderID=27
you should download these to your hard drive but read the online instructions as the ati driver needs dot.net framework to run
if you have any more problems with this please let me know,i will be glad to help
good luck

Go to Control Panel, Click on Display and then select the Settings Tab. There will be a slider for the Resolution - move it to the right until you get a setting that works

Click on start (botom left of the screen) then 'Control Panel'. Then click on 'Display'. Next click on the 'Settings' tab and theres a slider that allows you to set the resolution of the monitor.
If it doesn't allow you to set the resolution you want then click on 'help' from the start menu.
Good luck
