I hate to sound like a cheap ***, but why and i giving my change to the people who just poured my coffee which I just paid $1.65 for? They get paid to poor me the cup of coffee I just paid for, so is it really necessary that I have to give them more money. Maybe the menu should be rounded up so that it includes your change when you buy a cup of coffee. Coffee $1.65 +$.35 (For no reason) = $2.00.

To "maria_cd_in_...", there job is to poor coffee. Thats why they get an hourly wage for doing it. And besides, the guy who is ringing me up is not even the guy pooring the coffee. They have a team of paid employees behind the counter to do nothing but poor coffee. I help people all day long with revenue impacting problems. I save peopel tons of time and money for a living and no one tips me.

You are not cheap you are just realizing what everybody else is. Though tipping has it's place it seems as if everybody and his brother has the tip bucket out. The attitude at Starbucks is that the barista is performing this great service that nobody can do and deserves a tip. Like a bartender or something. In years past in other countries I have seen where the coffee guy does make a show of it and will give you something a bit special. But a Starbucks? No way. Buy your coffee and leave.

I don't tip the Starbucks (or any other coffee house people). ESPECIALLY if they're only pouring me coffee. When I get a latte or something that requires a little effort, then I think about it, but still don't tip. There's no real physical labor involved in pouring coffee. When it comes to eating out at a restaurant, I tip incredibly well (for excellent service) and don't think twice about it. If you're running back and forth to the kitchen and then my table wtih heavy trays, drinks, refills, etc. you deserve a tip! If you pour me a friggin cup of coffee, I should stuff the napkin that I used to wipe up the spilled coffee that fell out of my cup when you set it on the counter, even though I TOLD you I wanted room for cream, and yet you filled the coffee to the brim and then didn't put the lid on tightly, in your tip jar!

Starbucks Coffee is overrated and overpriced anyway. I goto either like The Beanery here in Salem Oregon that serves Allman Brothers Coffee or I goto one of those miniature coffee places around town that are 20 times better than Starbucks called Dutch Brothers Coffee.

I have a tip for Starbucks.....make better coffee and lower your prices.

personally I think Starbucks sucks and I rather make my own coffee at home then pay $3.75 for a cup of coffee that tastes just like the drip coffee I drink at work....i have never paid them a tip either when I do go there...when the heck did that take effect?

I only tip at a coffee shop if the barista had to actually put effort into making my drink - lnot just pour a cup of joe. And even then, it is usually much less than 15% - my usual tip amount at restaurants for good service. If my drink cost $2.75, I pay then $3 and tip my change.
Of course, tipping is totally up to you - but if they are friendly, put effort into your order and it is what you wanted, then they do deserve a THANK YOU at the very least.

I often wonder why its excepted to have a tip jar in a coffee shop. Tiping is for bar and table service. Do we tip the person behind the counter at McDonald's?

Never been to starbucks, but,...Is that all they do? just pour your coffee? Then don`t tip. Tips are meant for good service,I.E. a nice sit-down dinner. And by the way, If you get crappy service there, don`t tip them either. tips are meant for GOOD service.I used to work at a restaurant that only had a buffet. The only thing I did for the customers, was to get them their drinks. Only about 40% of the customers tipped, because of that.

if you don't want to tip them than you should go to 7-11 or wawa where you have to get your own coffee. I'm not trying to put you down but they are doing you an extra service that the others don't. plus if they are working at Starbucks they are not rolling in it. if you buy coffee at Starbucks you know its premium coffee and you are paying a higher price for it. would it kill you to give them the $0.35. they need it more than you.

I only tip people who rely on tips for the majority of their income, i.e. bellhops, servers, taxi drivers, etc. I'm with X-man--there's no reason to tip at Starbucks when we don't tip every person who gives us food.
