Hey James, I live in NC and I am Apostolic and go to an Apostolic church because I want to, also. But to answer your question, the speaking in tongues is evidence of the Holy Ghost to the unbeliever. To be that close to the Lord that he speaks through you, is a wonderful feeling. My best advice to you is, you need to talk to your pastor or find someone in your church that you have confidence in and ask them these questions, Yahoo Answers is really not the place to ask something like this because everybody don't believe in speaking in tongues. But it is real, and it is the evidence of the Holy Ghost in you. I have been where you are now. I started going to an Apostolic church when I was 16, my best friend at school was Apostolic. Anytime I had questions or didn't understand, I asked her and some lay person in the church. I am now 41 and I love going to a church where I can lift my hands and really feel the spirit of God come over me. You are in my prayers.

No where.

In Acts people had a special sign in special times the gospel moved to a new realm of people and helped Peter and the Apostles certify that God indeed accepted the Samertitans and Gentiles for example

The first time the gospel moved in Jerusalem, Judean, Samarian ALL THE BELIEVERS had sime sign. It was a special event and no promise of an all through history occuance and not a special thing for special people. At Pentacost, ALL THE BELIEVERS recieved the Holy Ghost, not some, not a few For the Samarians, ALL THE BELIEVERS recied the Holy Ghost same with Corneliun family, same with the followers of John the Baptist at Ephesis

In each case here and other places you will find ALL THE BELIEVERS recieved the Holy Ghost. The Holy SPirit is the pledge of SALVATION in Ephesians 1 and so everyone with Salvation has the Holy Spirit

If the speak in tounges, it is Gods choice

In the Upper Room, those who were gathered were "waiting for the promise of the Father." They were told that they would be given a sign that would let them know that the promise had arrived. The Scripture says, " cloven tongues like as of fire fell on each of them as the SPIRIT GAVE THEM UTTERANCE." The newfound ability to speak in "unlearned tongues" was the sign they were receiving. Remember when they left the Upper Room praising and glorifying God in the "new languages?" There were men who saw them and wondered how Galileans were able to speak in so many other languages. They even began to wonder whether or not they were drunk! But, Peter told them, "These men are not drunk on new wine as ye suppose, but are filled with the wine of the Spirit."

You've no doubt read the book of Acts - and as others explained to you about the upper room and speaking of tongues, etc.

There is an evidence of having the Holy Spirit - and not simply repenting. The evidence is receiving a gift for certain - however there is strong reason to believe speaking in tongues may well be the defining point - and here are the scriptures for you to draw your own conclusion. (I use the NIV but you can use the KJV if you like)...

ACTS 2: 2-4 [NIV]
2 Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

ACTS 2: 38 [NIV]
Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit

ACTS 10:44-46 [NIV] - PETER AT CORNELIUS' HOUSE
44 While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. 45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. 46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. Then Peter said, 47 "Can anyone keep these people from being baptized with water? They have received the Holy Spirit just as we have."
(Note verse 46 and 47 as evidence)

ACTS 8:14-17 [NIV] LATER AT SAMARIA...,
14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them; they had simply been baptized into[a] the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.
(Note that these had already repented - but the Holy Spirit had not yet come upon them - proof that there is some form of evidence, elsewise how would they know.)

* So When we repent we are saved BUT the Holy Spirit does not necessarily come into use at that minute, although for some He does. The Holy Spirit is God's seal on us, God's Spirit in us. What is the evidence that the Apostles looked for? YOU be the judge.

Others will excuse it away and dismiss it as limited for that time period - and will even quote a scripture about Tongues shall cease "When that which is perfect has come" but what they don't tell you, That which is perfect must come - JESUS (in his second coming), and by no means did any of the Apostles nor Paul nor Peter nor James, nor John nor Philip ever said.., "Speaking in Tongues have ceased" by any kind of official declaration and for these contemporary religious orders (sects/denominations) to take it on themselves to say they have ceased, they have taken an initiative not given them.

FINALLY.., Read ACTS 2:39 (you already read Acts 2:38 above)
The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call."

Gods love for us is unconditional.

Unconditional means no conditions.

This means exactly what it says, no hoops to jump through, no requirements of any kind.

No speaking in tongues, no accepting of anything or anyone is a requirement to any thing.

God is simply love, period.

Anything any one tells you about God other than this, is an attempt to put limitation on Gods love for us.

Gods love cannot have limits placed on it except in the minds of the confused.

This sounds true to you because you remember in you spirit what this love felt like.

Now that you remember, stop listening to the nonsense.

I am Apostolic, I believe that speaking in tongues in a spiritual gift, but I also believe that you can pray and ask God to give you this gift.

2 Corinthians 12: 4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.

7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit the message of wisdom, to another the message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues.11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them to each one, just as he determines.
