The largest hydroelectric dam in the world is actually the Three Gorges Dam in China. When fully operational 26 turbine generator sets each generating 700 megawatt of power are planned.

The largest hydroelectric generating station in the world is Itaipu, between Paraguay and Brazil. It has a generating capacity of 14,000 MW, or about 19 million horsepower. There are 20 water turbine units, each with a capacity of 700 MW, or about 940,000 horsepower. Each turbine can provide electric power for a city of 1.5 million people.
