The largest hydroelectric generating station in the world is Itaipu, between Paraguay and Brazil. It has a generating capacity of 14,000 MW, or about 19 million horsepower. There are 20 water turbine units, each with a capacity of 700 MW, or about 940,000 horsepower. Each turbine can provide electric power for a city of 1.5 million people.
