Butter both sides...that way one side will still be good. Slice in half lengthwise, toss out the side that hit the floor, eat the top side.

NOOO! IT IS SIMPLE!

the butter does not have more weight! the height from your table to the floor is very less. the bread has time to do only half a rotation, and since the buttered side is UP on the table, the bread falls buttered side DOWN after half a rotation.

This happens for the same reason why cats always land on there feet. So what I suggest is stick your toast on the cat’s back butter side up and see what happens.

Actually, I saw this theory tested on a TV program... I think it was "Mythbusters" and the conclusion was, the bread falls both face up and face down equally... it just SEEMS that the bread always falls butter side down.

A physical answer would be that it's slightly heavier on the butter side, and that when you drop it, it rolls around your finger like so:

----------------------- <----------- Initially
Ofinger

...... /
..... /
..../ Ofinger <------------ While falling
../
./

The momentum it has to spin around your finger will cause it to continue spinning until it's face down (heaviest face down) and then continue falling.

A more fun reason: You can blame it on Murphy's law which states that "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong. " :)
You can check them out here. http://roso.epfl.ch/dm/murphy.html
However, these are not proven, they're more for fun.

I think the butter makes that side heavier

its really about the weight distribution.
The bread has an equilibrium and the butter makes its side weigh more,
so thus it tends to land on that side more times than most.

Because that side is heavier. If you jumped lets say off a bridge into a river without trying to dive you would go head first right? That's because there is more weight up there.
