Keep on smilin'. Smiles are the best way to combat crankiness, and no one can look down on you for being pleasant!

Ever heard of "do unto others"? What if YOU became a mean, old, cranky fat man (or woman) would you want people moving away from you?? That's the way I try to live my life everyday. You never know what could happen to you, and if I ever got into that kind of position, I'd hope there were open minded, non judgemental people out there. He's a human being just like you, and deserves the same basic respect and dignity as you would yourself.

Ask him why he is so miserable, and if there is anything you can do to help. If he does not have a kind answer, simply say "I chose to be around people that make me a better person, happy people for example, and you are not displaying those qualities that I search for in people that I introduce to my life" Thank you.. and have a nice day. You may also remind him of all the wonderful things in his life if he actually answers why he is so miserable. Does he have a roof over his head? Does he have food in his stomach? If all else fails, ask him what would make him less miserable? And what action is he taking to make his life less miserable....He probably won't have an answer, at this time you could tell him to think about it and walk away.

Exactly the same as if a mean young cranky skinny woman comes near you. If she's minding her own business, what difference does her presence make to you? If she's bugging you, walk away, or, if you're in a situation where you can't just leave, say "excuse me, I can't talk now" (repeated if necessary) to deflect any attempts at conversation.

be pleasant, but immediately find something else to divert your attention. Whenever we have cranky old clients in my office, I usually find a piece of paperwork that i have to deliver to someone in the back office, or I have an immediate need to check the fax machine in the hall. If you look busy, they won't think you're slighting them, and you get away with minimal interaction with the cranky old fat man (chances are he's lecherous and smells too!)

Love conquers all.
There is a reason behind all that crankiness. He's probably trying to cover up a hurt or insecuritity he has. He's probably been criticized or belittled before, thus the wall.
Just be as courteous to him as you would to a young, friendly, slim gentleman.
Love conquers all.

Well if he's not toutching you and he's just talking to you then try politely to excuse your self. If he's touching you then that is not a good thing tell him firmly yet nicely that you do not approve and he needs to not do that. After a few warning if he's still touching you report him, yes the police can help you might be able to get a restraining order.

Strike up a conversation, you sound just as mean and cranky. You might find you have something in common.

Get away. I disagree with the smiling thing. That's my normal response, and it seems to be interpreted by those that I find undesirable as some sort of invitation.

I would walk away, that way you don't have to worry about any kind of confrontation, oh, and don't give eye contact, or he will think you want to talk to him as most people do. =)
