I was thinking of starting off painting my entire room a very light shade of brown. I want to then paint a large rectangle of the darker shade of brown in the center of one wall. The wall its self is about 15' long and about 10 feet tall. The rectangle would be about 6'8" long by about 3'2" tall. I then want to dress the window with a medium shade and accent the room with contemerary art work and decore. i would also want to hang window drapes in a darker brown, the same as the large rectangle i want to paint. I was also thinking of sponging the walls to give them a little texture. Please let me know if you feel that this would look good or if it would look bad. Thank you.

It will look good. My room have 3 walls painted chocolate brown and one beige. I just want to lick my wall all day long.

I have a lot of blue accessories that compliment the blue awesomely (is that a word?)

Ummm...are you ALLOWED to paint your dorm room??? I would ask housing first. I know we weren't allowed to paint our dorms.

Regardless, I'm not sure about the one rectangle in the middle of the wall-what's the point? PLUS the sponging? If you're trying for a contemporary look, sponging will not achieve that anyway. I say forget about the sponging altogether. For a clean look with some dimension, I think you need to think about layering, maybe painting a bunch of overlapping rectangles of different sizes. This is not an easy thing to do, however, and is a very time consuming technique, especially for a student.

Since you mention using different shades of brown why don't you try painting in large horizontal bands? Start at the top with the lightest shade of brown and work your way down the wall, with the colors getting gradually darker? The top band can be about 36", the next one could be 24", the next one 18", then 12", then 6" (that's about 8 ft. You might have to adjust the widths for a 10" high wall unless you want to repeat colors).

I think the painting idea sounds really sharp. If this was an apartment, the drapes would be great; however, since it is a dorm room and they are so small, I'd consider going with a light color with your drapes and other accessories like your bed linens, etc. You sound really creative. Good luck and have fun.

i dont think two shades of brown would go very well together.
you could try using warm[or browny] grey instead of brown.
this would go well with orange.

According to my knowledge about Feng shui better you find first where your room is located, because each part of our home has each color according to each direction. Try this color according to each elements or compass direction:

South = Element is Fire (color red, orange or pink)
South-West = Element is Earth (color yellow, brown)
West = Element is Metal (color white, gold or silver)
North-West = Metal (color white, gold or silver)
North = Element is Water (color blue, white, black)
North-East = Element is Earth (color yellow, brown)
East = Element is Wood (color green, blue)
South-East = Element is Wood (color is green or blue)

P.S. There’s no harm if you followed Feng Shui advice. Thanks!
