My college roommate is getting married, and her mother is paying for a lot of things the bridesmaids should be paying for (our dresses, hair & makeup (I think), a spa day the week before the wedding - nails, facial, etc). We've tried to pay for these things ourselves since that's the norm, but she won't let us (She's Filipino (sp?) so we wonder if it's her culture that drives this). Anyway, we REALLY appreciate it, but we'd like to get her a REALLY nice gift to show our appreciation...we just don't know what to get her since we don't know her very well. All we know is that she's got expensive tastes. Any suggestions?

wow, that is really nice of her. Maybe talk to the bride and ask if their is something her mother would really enjoy receiving...maybe a special necklace, or everyone can pitch in and opt. to buy her somthing bigger like a spa package for herself. Also another idea is for the bride and her maids to put together a special tribute toastand present it to her at the wedding!

I think it would be really nice to give her something personal...I'm sure she'll end up with tons of pictures from the professional photographer at the wedding but you all could take pictures of the planning process, dress fittings, bridal showers, and make her an album or scrapbook with all that stuff.
Another idea would be to find out from the bride what her favorite store is and get a gift certificate. Especially if it is a store like Tiffany's or some other pretty expensive place, she might really enjoy being able to treat herself to something nice. Good luck finding something.

Hmm... Would she appreciate a spa day herself? Maybe AFTER the wedding to recoup from all the stress? (I'm planning my wedding as well, it's a lot of work for our poor mom's!). Depending on your budget & the number of girls involved, perhaps you could all chip in to buy her something nice to wear on the wedding day? Consult with the bride, of course. You would not want to step on her toes, but perhaps a nice pair of earrings or some type of jewelry. Then there's also a weekend away somewhere, perhaps a gift certificate for an evening or two at a nice resort nearby?

I would say just get a gift for the bride. It might be awkward for the Mom and grandmother to open gifts of their own at their daughter and grandaughter's bridal shower. Throwing a shower for the bride is gift enough. Anything more might be overdoing it. Very thoughtful of you though.

Get her a VISA or American Express gift card so she can spend the money however she likes (she may even use it on the wedding in the end). If everyone chips in she could get a good amount of money on there and it won't be as tacky as cash.

I have to agree with the other day at the spa answer. Or how about a gift certificate to her favorite restaurant? Or how about a bed and breakfast gift certificate?
