My step daughter is deaf and uses sign language to communicate. Mom does not sign but Dad and I do. She lives with her mother and attends a program that is really not doing her well. She is not signing to her ability but mom doesn't know because she doesn't sign and doesn't know what to expect. When we talk to her about changing programs she says absolutely not because she doesn't want her to attend a school out of town. Any ideas to help her get a better education?

Get mom in the program. She has GOT to learn. That's about all you can do and probably will have the best result.

Your step daughter really needs to get out of the program she is in right now if you feel she is not doing well. I am a teacher of the Deaf in a high school program where most of the students commute from out of town. You don't say how old your step daughter is but if she is not getting a quality education when she is young, it is going to hurt her in the future. I have seen what happens to kids and how much they have to struggle because they don't have the foundations of learning by the time they get to high school. Research your area and found out what other programs are available. You could also contact the local Deaf agency and get an advocate for her. The advocate could probably help you convince her mother. Good Luck!

My 7 year old son is deaf with a cochlear implant, I live in Toronto, Canada. The school system here assesses my son every single year to see what his needs are in order to best place him. In the beginning he was in an all auditory program and he was not doing well at all so they switched him to an auditory program with sign support he is since doing very well. I have never formally learned sign language (picked it up thru my son) Are your step daughters teachers saying that she could be doing better ?? Or is it just your assumption ?

I am a deaf student in a residental school. I think you should do what you just said, It is the best for her. Deaf teachers are good person, they will connect to the children they are teaching , and introduce many wonderful things about life that kids should know and experience and to prepare for even more things life has in store for them.

I am deaf and all of my family don't sign. sometimes we have a hard time communicating, but i wish they can learn to sign. if you want her to learn signing, then you can send her to the special ed with a deaf class. that's where I go to learn sign language since elementary school.
