The more common term is "Time is money."

The literal meaning is the expression of the economics principle of 'opportunity cost,'--The time you spend doing something (like, be stuck in a traffic jam) is time you can't spend doing something that would make you money. So the 30 minutes in a traffic jam cost you 30 minutes worth of pay at work.

The more informal meaning is just that time is precious and valuable.

When you use time wisely...rather than wasting time, time does literally turn to money.

Take, for example. the student who spends much of his time playing video games, vs. the student who spends time at study or work. The student who plays video games will spend countless nights cramming and most likely failing and re-taking classes due to poor GPA. While the student who studies or works during their time will make money while at work and his time spent studying won't be wasted either. He'll most likely not have to re-take classes, graduate on time with a good GPA and go on to quickly obtain a better job...which turns to more money.

Hence the saying..."Time is money."
