The pain is unbearable at times and feels like my skull is being pulled down from behind. I've just finished physical therapy with no results and i can't take muscle relaxers because I have to go to work everyday. I've tried tennis balls in a sock behind my head, various massagers and vicodin. Nothing helps so far. Does anyone have any ideas?

Ice or heat for 15 minutes at a time. Gentle stretching (which you should have learned from your PT) during or after heat. Consider seeing a massage therapist or even a chiropractor since physical therapy did not work for you. You may even consider alternative therapies such as acupuncture. Still no relief? Seek out as physiatrist for pain management and proper medical advice.

I also have a problem with the muscles in the back of my neck. The only relief I get is with applying as much pressure as possible to the area. Sometimes along with the pressure an ice pack or heating pad helps. I like the ice, as it reduces inflammation. I get a small bean bag and stick it between my neck and a very firm pillow raised a little. The ice goes between the bag and my neck and the pressure keeps it in place. Try it. It really feels good. Hope it helps.
