Any dog bred for survival in that climate, i.e. arctic breeds with a double coat.

Examples: Alaskan Malamutes, Samoyeds, Siberian Huskies, Karelian Bear Dogs, Alaskan Huskies/Village Dogs, etc. These dogs were bred to live and work in the snow, and usually prefer being outside in the cold to being indoors. I can look out my window during a snow storm and see nearly all of my sled dogs curled up *on top* of their houses under 2 inches of snow. They'd rather be there than inside the houses.

Other examples of double-coated dogs: St. Bernards, Great Pyrs, Newfoundlands, etc.

Additional tip: Relying on Disney movies (i.e. "8 Below") for any *factual* information on a dog breed is a very bad idea. ;)

All dogs need human care.
Many breeds do well in cold but still need a home and food and water provided to them.
Dogs since being domestacated have come to depend on humans for food and shelter and the like. They do not survive well with out help from man.

Huskies can survive in the cold. Our husky likes it much better outside in the winter, and much better inside during the summer. He is always in the in house at night and is never left outside unless he wants to be out side. I prefer him in the house of course as I don't believe in getting a dog just to make it stay outside all of the time. He tells us when he wants to go out and when he wants to come in. The water issue is a VERY important one, especially in cold climates where a bowl of water will quickly freeze. We purchased an outside water bowl for our husky. The bowl is plugged in and it keeps the water just warm enough to keep it from freezing. Any dog though needs to be with it's owners, so if you are getting a dog but plan on not letting it in the house, you may want to reconsider getting one.

The Northern breeds with thick, heavy coats - Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute, Samoyed, Norwegian Elkhound.

But even they need high calorie dog food, fresh (heated) drinking water and shelter like a dog house small enough to curl up in.

A Dingo can and will survive in the cold. I couldn't even keep my dog inside, she kept overheating after a couple of minutes. The lady who gave her to me said that I shouldn't be surprised if she slept in the snow, even if she had a house, because that's what they do. They're also great cattle dogs.

i live in northern alberta canada. All husky's can live outside as long as they have a good dog house with hay on the floor for circultion and your dog will not sweat. I have husky-bouvier terrier cross outside now for 6 years.Great watch dog.
Just keep alot of fresh water and keep the dog food inside. If your concerned on those freezing nights put a light bulb in the doghouse, it keeps them warm and cover the door with a flap.

i have two siberian huskies, and they absolutly LOVE the snow. they are great dogs for a cold climate, but like others have said, i would not leave them outside overnight, and you always have to keep a watch on them, if they want to come in let them. dont just buy a dog and leave it outside without human contact.

none, all domesticated animals need access to free flowing water and some heat. A Malamute may do well in teh cold, but cannot be left outside forever

The Saint Bernard. They thrive in cold weather and overheat in the summer very easily.
