To my knowledge, DNA testing can be performed on hair, IF the hair contains a (preferably live) folicle. Fragments of hair or hair without a folicle are exceptionally hard to type, genetically as the strands of hair itself do not contain genetic material, per se. Hair is composed of proteins that may yield DNA, but these are a little bit harder to come by. Folicles, as a living part of the body do contain DNA as the folicles themselves are composed of living cells that aren't routinely shed from the human body. There may be other methods of obtaining DNA from hair, but to the best of my knowledge, this is not a viable way of deriving DNA types, let alone viable samples.

Because of advances in DNA retrieval and testing, some of my information might be outdated, but it's my general understanding that ANY DNA found in hair is likely degraded, unless you're lucky enough to find hair that's been snagged from the head rather than broken off. (hairbrushes and combs should be full of yanked out hair.) And as for testing, or rather the cost of testing, I am not entirely sure of that, but there are probably resources somewhere on line, if you google key words like "DNA Testing" or "Genotype Identification" or something like that.

yes a DNA test can be performed on your sons hair to determine paternity of you alleged grandson. There is also the opportunity to use your hair or inside cheek swab sample to determine if the child is related to you. I am not sure about the cost, but any physician should be able to find this out for you. Good luck!

think hard about other things that might have your son's DNA on them.. an envelope he mailed you that he licked, any clothes, baby teeth you kept, anything that might have his blood on it, etc....

talk to your local Police Dept about where else kids DNA might be found around the house. They would know since they have to collect it when they are looking for lost or missing kids.

locate a REALLY good lab and be prepared to submit a sample of your own DNA for matching purposes. if possible get a sample of his "mother's?" DNA by what ever means necessary.

plan on spending about $1K.

Maury Povich did a show on a child and grandmother. They used the grand mother for any likeness in genes.

Genetic fingerprinting is used in forensic science, to match suspects to samples of blood, hair, saliva or semen. Please see the webpage for more details on DNA test.
