ok i got a knife from a friend and it had these little marks on it... i heard that toothpaste does good on scratches and stuff on metals... well i was wrong... it might have gotten rid of the little marks but now there are big long black streaks on it... i want to keep the chrome integrity of the knife if at all possible but how would i clean it myself? if any of you must know the knife is a western "w49"

That black stuff sounds like some sort of chemical reaction. Sounds silly, but did you wash the toothpaste off? I wonder if there is some sort of coating that was sprayed on the knife and this is what caused the reaction...toothpaste and steel shouldn't react like that.

Jeweler's rouge is a neutral abrasive similar to the grit used in toothpaste. Brasso is also pretty good, but full of hydrocarbons and might cause even weirder reactions. If you really want to be careful, water, leather, and lots of elbow grease.
