Age-old camping wisdom suggests you pitch your tent facing southeast to maximize the effect of the morning sun. Perhaps this wisdom made sense back in the day of soggy canvas pup tents, virgin campsites, and cast-iron skillets. Today we have extremely weather-proof modern tents that rarely if ever leak and most camp-sites have established tent pads. If we obey this rule today we are likely to wind up pitching our tent facing away from the fire-pit, the majestic mountain, or the awesome view. I would pitch your tent facing the way that makes the most sense for where ever you are.

Unless you're worried about the door having to face Mecca, I'd say there's no specific direction in which to pitch a tent--with the exception of when your tent setup is dictated by your terrain or weather (e.g., if you want the door to face away from the wind or rain). Facing the door east will maximize your natural lighting in the morning, but that's all.

well i hope i can be of some help ... I made it to Eagle Scout so i should know this ... The most important thing to worry about in pitching a tent concerning the direction of the door is elevation... you dont want to put the door facing the high side of a hill. If it rains, the water will flow right into your tent. But you also want to pitch your tent in the highest point of elevation in your area. Hope i could help.

I don't know about a default cardinal direction, but if you're on a slope I'd suggest putting the "door" facing down-slope so that you're less likely to get water pouring into the tent.

the sun rises in the east, sets in the west. Set the door west and you won't get the morning sun shining in.

As a camper I don't think it matters where is is facing as long as you are getting air movement.
