Yes, in Ramadan, Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset. They abstain from food, drink, smoke, and sex. Once sunset comes, they can eat, drink, smoke, and make love with their spouses. As for feasting, they are supposed to eat to sustain themselves, it's not like a huge eat fest or anything.

As for Allah sleeping, Allah is Almighty God, who doesn't sleep at all. Sleep is only found in the animal kingdom, which God created. God created sleep, before His creation of sleep, there was no sleep but there was God. God is not like His own creation that he is awake or asleep, so no, Muslims don't feast 'cause Allah is asleep. It's not a case of "While the cat's away, the mice will play."

Hi,

It is true that muslims fast during the month of Ramadan. This means that they do not eat and drink from dawn until after sunset. After the sun has set the fast is broken and they are then allowed to eat and drink. The kind of meal that is eaten to break the fast varies from person to person. Some people do have what could be described as a feast but some people may just have a drink of water and some fruit.

The reason for fasting as described by the Qur'an is to increase the person's awareness of Allah. There are also other benefits such as the benefits to health and the understanding that is gained of how it feels to be hungry resulting in compassion towards the poor.

Muslims fast as an act of Obedience to Allah who they believe to be the most merciful and also to be the only one worthy of worship.

He is described in the Quran as
"...Allah the One.

He is The 'Samad' [one who needs no sleep or rest nor any food or drink. In fact one who needs nothing but is the provider.]

He begets not nor was He begotten [i.e. He has no parents and NO son.}

There is none co-equal or comparable unto him. [there is none like him]"

Muslims do not believe Allah ever sleeps and so the answer to the last part of your question is no.

Hope this has been helpful.

Good question.

Any fast in Islam has the same requirements. One fasts from eating, drinking, sexual intercourse, smoking inhaling scents from just before sunrise to just after sunset. In Islamic areas where the call to prayer is heard this means from the call to prayer for the morning prayers to the call to prayer for the sunset prayers. This is not because of any sleeping the God might do, but rather because that is the way the fast is set up. Even optional fasts like Ashura, or weekly fasting that many do is like this.

The Ramadhan fast is special in that it is the only fast that we are required to do. It lasts each day through the entire month of Ramadhan, either 29 or 30 days depending on the sighting of the new moon at the beginning and end.

While it is true that one can partake of all these things during the night it is still recommended that one partake in moderation. The excesses that many Muslim people partake in during Ramadhan are really to be frowned on and have no basis in the religion.

At the end of Ramadhan there is a festival which IS the time for feasting and celebration. At that time people wear new clothes, visit friends and relatives and give gifts. This is called Eid and is one of the two Eids of the year. The other one being at the end of Hajj.

Something else you might be interested in is that one is also supposed to fast from diseases of the heart such as anger, greed, jealousy, enmity, avarice, and etc. There is a hadith wherein Muhammad (peace be upon him) says that if you do not fast from anger then god does not want your hunger.

Peace and Blessings,

Salim

The first part, true. The second part, just silly.

They fast from sunrise to sunset every day for a month. It's not about Allah sleeping, I'm inclined to believe it's connected with the fact that if a person doesn't eat or drink for a month, they walk a lot closer to Allah than intended...

I am a muslim and I know fasting as a unique moral and spritual characteristics of Islam.
Literally defined, fasting means to abstain"completely" from foods, drinks, intimate intercourse and smoking, before the break of thedawn till sunset, during the entire month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic year.
When Islam introduced this matchless institution, it planted an ever-growing tree of infinite virtue and invaluable products. Here is an explanation of the spiritual meaning of the Islamic Fasting:"It teaches man the principle of sincere Love, because when he observes fasting he does it out of deep love for God. And the man who loves God truly is a man who really knows what love is."

"O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint...Ramadan is the (month) in which was sent down the Quran, as a guide to mankind, also clear (Signs) for guidance and judgment (between right and wrong). So every one of you who is present (at his home) during that month should spend it in fasting ..." Qur'an Chapter 2, verses 183 and 185.

As for your question, No muslim is a muslim if he/she believes that Allah is sleeping..."May Allah Keep Us from such evel saying"

The Qur'an Infact clearly states:

"...No slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth? He knoweth what (appeareth to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His knowledge except as He willeth. His Throne doth extend over the heavens and the earth, and He feeleth no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the Most High, the Supreme (in glory)..."
Qur'an Chapter 2, verses 255

Yeah. Its also funny when you invite them to a party for say like halloween and they bring their own dinner. It isnt like a feast. They eat food that is going to provide them with enough sustinance to last through the day. Its also not junk food.
