I think the best person to ask on this planet would be George Lucas! Otherwise I wish I knew myself. Once I saw a book at the library for kids . The book had different things about Star Wars in it and they were actually showing a lightsaber sliced in 2! They would actually explain all the parts contained in it. It was really convincing . Now don't ask me for the freaking name of the book cause I don't remember. But what I said is true though! Go to libraries and may the force be with you...

P.S.: You can actually buy replicas but they don't actually work per say. Comic book stores can guide you with this.

First you must become a jedi knight then you may weld a light sabre. After rigorous training then you will get the secrets to the engineering diagram to a light sabre. Don't reverse engineer a light sabre, it is made to explode with such tamperings.

Quite simply, invent a portable means to contain an anti-matter field. The "light sabre" could be constructed of anti-matter, giving it the characteristics of the one used by padawans and masters all over the galaxy.
