they wear what protection they can. they may not call it bullet-proof vests, my hubby calls them sappy plates. and he has shown me exactly how they are used to protect him. so, they do have protection.

The expense is probably one of the reasons. They would have to wear bullet proof uniforms from head to toe! Also, there is probably nothing that is bullet proof against some of the weapons that are used.

they do. it's called a flak jacket. if you ever notice that big heavy looking vest that the soldiers who are out and about in Iraq are wearing... it's bullet proof. i've seen video of a guy who gets shot in the middle of the chest, fall down then get up a second later and take out the dumb *** who shot them to begin with. they only have to wear them when they're "outside the wire" though (when they leave the protection of the base camp) because those things are HEAVY!!

Because we have to balance the risks of wearing the extra armor with the benefits the armor provides.

For example, for every pound of armor you wear there is one pound of something you cannot take with you. Another issue is that the more armor you wear the less agility and speed you have.

Heavy, hot and difficult to manuever in. Also, most bulletproof clothing will not stop centerfire bullets (the bullets with pointy ends), the most common round used.

They do, they are called flack jackets, they have kevlar body armor also. However, they cost a lot of money, don't cover your entire body, are hot, heavy, and don't protect against explosions, etc.
