Listen bird - Don't listen to any of that 'it's only a dog' ****!!!

I lost a dog after 14 yrs and it still breaks my heart 6 years on - but it really does get easier - you will never forget your pup but as long as you remember all the good times.

My dog was in a lot of pain when she died so I suppose I just realise that she's better off now. And - It's plainly obvious to me that the likes of Pedro have either never had a pet (shame on their parents) or have NO heart! A dog is part of your family!!! It is like a brother or sister, etc!

You will realise in time you're OK and remember you've got the new pup to consider!

If you need a chat contact me bird!

A friend sent me this when I lost my dog a few years ago and it really helped.

WHY DOGS DON'T LIVE LONGER
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year old Irish Wolfhound named Belker.
The dog's owners; Ron, his wife Lisa and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family there was no more miracles left for Belker and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home.
As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for the four-year-old Shane to observe the procedure. They felt Shane could learn something from the experience.
The next day I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker's family surrounded him. Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time that I wondered if he understood what was going on. Within a few minutes, Belker slipped peacefully away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker's transition without any difficulty or confusion.
We sat together for a while after Belker's death, wondering aloud about the sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives.

Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, "I know why."
Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me - I'd never heard a more comforting explanation:
He said, "Everybody is born so that they can learn how to live a good life... like loving everybody and being nice, right?"
The four-year-old continued, "Well, animals already know how to do that, so they don't have to stay as long."

I have faced exactly the same situation as you did. My female dobermann 'Nancy' passed away on Valentines day which was her birthday too due to a kidney ailment. We had her daughter 'Daisy' to help us get over the tragedy. The daughter in her own way did a lot for us to feel better, though she had lost her mother who had pampered her till then (believe me , Dog mothers can pamper like we humans do). Daisy also passed away at the same age in June 2004. It still hurts to have lost two babies which were members of our family but we are slowly returning to normalcy, cherishing the happy moments which both the mother and daughter gave us for nearly 10 years. My condolences and may you also feel better. Afterall time is the best healer.

it's a crazy time after losing a dog; nothing seems to help.

as has already been said, look to your memories and take comfort in the good times you shared.

it does get better in time, but until then - yes, it is sheer hell.

Try to concentrate on your other dog; dont let it suffer / miss out because you are down.

why not talk to the current dog about the one that passed. we all know that dogs are the best listeners of all.

Sorry for your loss.

Hi, I lost my lovely girl 6 months ago. I thought I would never smile again, but what helped me was to look at photo's and talk about the funny things she did. Don't get me wrong, I shed many tears along the way, and still do. My husband saved the photo's we had of her on to a cd and added music in the background, which was lovely.
Try not to get too upset about her death, but remember how she enjoyed living with you !!!! She will always be in your heart.

I hope when we all get to the end there is a heaven for animal lovers and a hell for cruel people. I am sorry for you loss. Dogs are the greatest friends but they sure will breakk your heart. I lost mine 20 years ago and I still love that dog. Time makes it better though..

I lost my 3 year old alsatian to kidney failure four years ago.

I didn't want to, but my kids persuaded me to get another dog.

I got a completely different dog. She will never be a replacement, but she has made her own space in our lives & the love she gives us helped us through the hardest times.

I guess time is the greatest healer.

Sometimes when I think of her it still hurts, but nothing compared to those first days of loss.

Losing a pet is a terrible thing and with time it will get easier although you will never forget her. She will always be in your heart.

Good luck and I hope the pain starts to ease soon.
