Birdseed may be best. It can be safely eaten by birds or squirrels, etc. If you get it in your hair, you can brush it out in a few minutes. I can't see that lava is a major concern. Uncooked rice, while associated with fertitlity, is as you said a risk to the scavengers. Throwing confetti means chewing up some of our precious living resources that go into making paper.
If one truely wishes well to the newly married couple, perhaps it might be a nice idea to follow the middle-eastern custom of pinning money on a ribbon hanging from the bride and groom's shoulders directly after the ceremony. Think of it a thowing money into a wishing well!
Blowing shiny bubbles is not a bad idea either. The farewell/ good luck reaction of the wedding guests should be a joyful time.

4) However, I've been most impressed with the idea of all the guests ringing miniature bells (usually with ribbons holding cards engraved with the name of the bride and groom and the wedding date). It's festive and it eliminates the concern of germs, exploding birds and messy cleanup.

hmmmmmmmm I have never heard that about bird seeds. Good think to know. THanks. Well if a bird is dumb enough to keep eating the rice after he feel full then so be it. Confetti is pretty but is messy and blows all over so cant be cleaned up. I have been to weddings that when you leave the church you handed a bottle of bubbles a small bubbles and you blow bubbles for the bride and groom. you can get small bubble bottles very cheap. have even seen them at dollar stores for a big pack they are white and have a ribbon around them. you can also have your name and date put on the bottle and a thank you. as a keepsake.

get everyone to blow bubbles you can get little mini wedding bottles and wands and discount shops just leave them in the aisle seats with tiny note attatched to blow bubbles instead of confetti
