Rotts are very loyal companions if treated right. They are very protective of their owner and family, they are great dogs. I owned one and he was the sweetest dog, but like most big dogs hip dyspasia usually hits and that is what happened to mine. Your boyfriend has picked a good breed to want. Me, I always wanted a st.bernard and people could not understand why, but it is the breed that i absolutely fell in love with, well one day i got one, he is a rescue from a bad breeder and he is the best dog i could have ever owned. The rott is just the breed your boyfriend has evidently fell in love with and dreams to own one, it will make a wonderful pet if he treats it right.

People have a thing for certain kinds of dogs the same way they do for cars or music There is just something about them you like.
As for them being dangerous, No not at all, or at least any more likely to hurt you or your family, I've owned two as well as many other breeds. They aren't my favorite but they are close to the top.
As for people saying a man wants a certain kind of big dog because it makes him feel manly, that's possible, but it is more possible that a man who will only own a small dog is the same way,(he gets a small dog so as not to feel inadequate the way a week man wants a stupid woman) .
I would just say that the you two should talk (if you two are a serious couple.. if not it isn't your business anymore than the kind of car he buys) But if you are serious and want to stay serious you should go together to a few breeders homes and see how they react with the family and with you. You will find that they are a great dog to have and will probably grow to love him more than your boyfriend does.

A rottie can be dangerous. But it also can be the best animal you could ever own.
Most of the time men want these dogs to show they are aggressive, bold and well, you get the idea.
I have a friend who's son got one for graduation and that is the most loveable dog I've ever met. I wouldn't be afraid of him unless of course I showed up and tried to hurt someone or break into the house, he'd let you in but you will not get back out. They like most dogs are great protectors. But, they need way more attention and exercise than most dogs because of their energy that is natural to them. So, he has to be dedicated to taking the dog twice a day for a run and/or rollerskating and dog parks and whatever else you have in your area.
Don't worry, all dogs, just like Pit Bulls, have tempers and all have ways of being handled, if you treat them bad they will be bad and if you treat them well, they will respond the same way.
Watch Ceasar Milans show on Discovery Channel, he has 40 dogs in his pack that are rotties to poddles....they are fine.
Enjoy, don't show fear, they smell that!

The dog in general is not dangerous if gotten from the right breeders. In fact they make great family dogs. However, they can tend to be more owner and property protective. If you get one, be sure it is young, and be sure to socialize it frequently with all manner of people and other dogs, and he will turn out to be a great pet. They are a great deterrent against robbery, because a lot of would-be robbers will turn the other cheek if they see a Rott in your yard, even if he really is just a big teddy bear.

I raised these dogs, had them around my children, they're beautiful loyal dogs, which can be trained to protect your family. Be sure if he gets one of these dogs he goes to a reputable breeder with excellent lines and there shouldn't be a problem. As with any dog the owner can make them good dogs or they can make them dangerous dogs.

These are some of the prettiest dogs I've known. All you have to do is look at them and you will understand why he wants one. They are loving, caring creatures and you will learn to love one too if you allow yourself. I thought they were dangerous, too, but what they are is protective. They will protect your home and you. Trust me its not a bad thing you just have to get over your fear of the dog and look at the beauty of them!

I had a Rott when I was in HS. You couldn't ask for a better protector of it's family. I wont have another, because he was irreplacable. But if you research bloodline and buy from a breeder/reputable pet store, you can't go worng.
