Our children get little enough education as it is.

Having invigilated in GCSE Examinations this year, I was amazed at how EASY the questions were compared to when I was at school... as an example they gave a list of the planets AND their distances from the Sun and then asked which was the nearest planet to the Sun - the question actually gave them the answer!!! All you had to be able to do is READ. For being able to READ you were given two marks towards a qualification which says you know about Physics - utter rubbish... two marks towards a useless piece of paper that I, as someone who makes decisions about whether or not to employ people, do not trust to tell me anything about the level of education of a job applicant.

I wouldn't object to longer school holidays if the level of education was higher but the main problem with long school holidays is that kids quickly forget even the basic skills in things like maths and english which they have to re-learn again the following school year.

My children will be given at least an hour's maths and english practice every day during the school holidays which is one of the reasons I believe they are both top of their respective years at school.

You may think that having shorter school holidays "sucks" but within a week most kids are bored and hanging about on street corners or playing computer games or getting into trouble. Long school holidays may seem like a great idea but it will do you no good when you have to go out and get a job only to find that your education isn't all that it should be.

This will surprise you then. In Hawaii, all public schools have changed their school schedule to start at the end of July and end at the beginning of June. This year round schedule allows for more shorter holiday breaks between to give the students time to rest their brain, but not too long of a break so that they may forget what they've learned in the last quarter. Also, for a few schools there is a track system. It consists of 3 tracks where one track is always off. This rotating schedule allows a small built school to manage the larger population of students. This will also cause the tracks to start and end at various times. For instance, one track just started the new school year at the end of June, the next one will start at the beginning of July and the last one will start at the end of July. Each track will have about 4 weeks of school sessions and 3 weeks off.

So, I think British schools are fine just the way they are.

So we want to give kids MORE time to destroy bus shelters and town centres now ?!
I think that the school terms should be longer - it would prepare them for real life ! I wish I got 6 weeks off in the summer and 4 weeks at Christmas and 2 weeks for easter and 2 half term weeks and and and the list goes on. What job gives you as many holidays as that ?
Also it's hardly like they are long days are they - I'd love to start at 9am and finish at 3pm !
Not only that but think of the parents that would have to amuse the children or pay for child care for longer.

Kids in the uk have too much time off school as it is. The cost of child care is way too high. What if you are a single parent and have to work. I think schools should offer to open in the six week holidays so that people who do not work can run some sort of free day care. Parents could contribute money to go towards school funds. Kids could take packed lunches.
I know i would offer my services for free at my childs school.

Scottish schools have been off since the end of June. To be honest I think 6 weeks are enough, the kids get bored, it's expensive for parents and for those who are working a noghtmare to get childcare

You asked for my opinion and here it is. School holidays and School hours should be the same as the general workforce 4 weeks holiday plus bank holidays and 40 hours a week. There are far to many holidays and perhaps there might be less crime and violence by young people as they would be to knackered to do anything. It would get them ready for when they go to work.

Actually, they end for summer holiday the first week of June, and begin again the first week of September.
The biggest problem with this, I believe, would be in they forget most of what they had learned prior.
~Because sometimes it is rocket science.~
