Schools are having a hard time teaching anything from linguistics to history, because in the attempt to make everything politically correct there are several different obstacles. You can't place "slower learning" kids with other slow learners because "that will impact their self esteem" There is the problem with the advent of instant messaging, and it does have a trickle down effect. Plus, if pushed these kids will resort to they "are being taught as much as they can learn" which we both know is b S because you never know what you DON'T know! It's the schools being forced to appease parents who in turn are trying to make things better for their kids, not realizing that actual learning would be the best thing for them. The kid as a victim is a relatively new phenomenon and will ill serve us in the future years. (Don't EVEN get me started on High School History!!!)

My kids are terrific examples. They use a word processor for spelling and grammar checking. They proof read their written essays. However, when it comes to chatting on the computer or text messaging over the phone, it will be letters for (U = you) and some cryptic words and slang's. Drives me bonkers because I read over their shoulders sometimes and ask them if the reader understands all of that hieroglyphics. They say that no only it takes too long to type and they'll get less messaging done, but the people their age don't like reading long messages.

Unfortunately, we are immersed in bad language skills in this country. Even if it is still taught in schools, all you have to do is watch TV (even the news) or read signs and newspapers to see that we just don't use language correctly. I think it is lpartly due to laziness, but I know the day to day exposure to bad language has exacerbated the situation.
Ex: a TV commercial about cell phone, a guy walks up and asks a lady on a ladder where to find this phone...she says: "Sir, YOU in a hardware store."

It's not just kids. I understand if english is not your first language or if there is a real problem like dyslexia, even typos are no big deal, but it would seem that a lot of people are just plain lazy or don't read at all.
Is this supposed to be cybonics? The language of cyberspace?
It's not cool to be ignorant.

they teach it plenty, but kids just dont care. its like, if they can understand the main point of what you are saying, then why be exact? Its more of an issue of laziness... too lazy to go above and beyond when you dont have to. I admit I do it quite a bit too.
actually, shortened words and 'txt chat' got started when people were being charged in text messaging(on cell phones) by letter... they needed a way to make words shorter and cheaper, but still understandable.
btw, you spelled 'their' wrong... lol.

Both. Teachers nowadays don't teach as much grammar as before and kids just don't care about it. As long as the teacher understands it, it's all just fine.

Kids do not care. I find it very annoying when people use the text messaging style of communication here. When you have a full keyboard there is no excuse for not typing out words.
I also find it very annoying when people do not care to answer questions factually.
If you do not know the answer to a question please do not pretend that you do. Either do not answer or state "in my opinion ...".
