The best beer you can get doesn't come from the store or your local liquor shack on the corner.
You need to go somewhere with it's own brewery and try the beer there. I hate beer too, but I found I enjoy dark lagers that are brewed right at the restaraunt. Try that, and it might change your mind about beer. Breweries built in to places like "Rock Bottem Brewery" or other places that brew their own beer might change your mind.

I'm more of a fan of wine then beer :) with beer there's numerous types first decide if you like light or dark beers (for darks some good ones are Newcastle and Guiness and for light I like Samual Adams). Try lots of different beers and decide what you like yourself a lot of it is a matter of preference and style. there are also lots of types of wines and grapes that go into making them... try different things. Stay away from the cheapest beers those are the ones that really taste like water/piss combo (i.e. PBR, Natural Ice, MGD, etc.)
As far as blacking out goes that's probably because you're drinking too much too fast. I have this happen to me pretty easily when I drink too much. Slow it down a little. You don't have to do shot after shot or play more of a drinking game then you can handle. Drink some water in between alcoholic drinks (this will also help you to have less of a hangover the next day). If you plan on drinking heavily and know you tend to black out (this will happen with beer or hard liquor) make sure you trust the people you're drinking with. You don't want to get taken advantage of and you don't want the people around to do something stupid and dangerous.

Cider is a good alternative if you are not a big beer drinker.
Alternately, you could look for beers flavoured with fruit. There's lots of those around. Two personal fruiting beer favourites for me are Lindemans Framboise, or St Ambroise Apricot Wheat Ale. But if you are in the US then I'm sure there's a local micro brewery that would offer something tasty.
Another idea would be to mix your beer with something such as a splash of sprite, or lime cordial as in a shandy or lager and lime. One thing about beer - most people don't like it the first few times they drink it. I mean you grow up drinking sweet sugary drinks and beer is nothing like that, but the more you drink it the more you'll like it. The truth is that most people, especially guys, would be drinking wildberry coolers if it were not for peer pressure because we would never acquire that taste. Luckily, as a victim of peer pressure I never got into wildberry coolers and just went straight to the beer. I love the stuff now and have for some time.

Try learning about good wine instead. I hate the taste of beer, too, and as your say, hard liquor will scare you after awhile. But good wine expects you to drink it slowly, it takes its time in seducing you. There are some marvelous California wines that are not that expensive, and if you go to a tasting room (well, we have lots of them here in California), and actually make notes on what you taste, it won't take you long to get to know good wines. Try a good California Cabernet Savignon (spell checker help me), for a nice, elegant red wine you can get most anywhere.

I have found the pale ales taste better than darker brews. Labatte Blue and Hinekin is what I drink for a beer. I've found that Corna smells like skunk. Wine is always a good choice. You can get dry or sweet.

Beer will do the same thing to you. It will only take longer. the problem is not the alcohol content, it's how much you want to get drunk. Cut back on the drinking or ask for half strength drinks.

Drink Coors Light. I tried it once and I didn't taste anything. I actually like beer and have since shied away from that water in a can.

Guiness is the onle "beer" I drink. Try drinking Bailey's or Cask and Cream (casket cream) instead. Sounds like you just need to slow down, though. Here's a tip...if you're blacking out, you drink too much.

I don't care for the taste of beer in any form or with any mixture, but I've heard about mixing it half-and-half with lemonade (you may have to adjust the mixing ratio to suit your tastes).

Drink malt liquor instead. I'm a big proponent of St. Ides, but you might want to start with Olde English or Mickey's.
