is better than cardio because you gain muscle mass which helps you burn more calories thorugh out the day. So if I lift wieghts for about an hour 4 times a week, will I lose weight? I'm planning to do weight lifting first then when I see a diff in my muscle mass, I'll continue my cardio. What do you think. And No I am not afraid to get big even if I am a girl, i think that's just plain stupid.

Weight lifting will increase your muscle mass, which will increase your basal metabolic rate, i.e. the rate at which your body burns calories even when resting. This is because muscle consumes energy even when not being used, and fat does not (or does burn energy only very little, compared to muscle). So a more muscular person will be able to eat more calories per day without gaining fat. In other words, if you can't successfully lose fat by eating less, try weight training to burn fat and keep it off.
Since weight lifting will cause an increase in muscle mass, you may not 'lose weight', but if your weight stays the same and you gain muscle mass (muscle weight), you must lose an equal weight of fat tissue. So although your scale weight may not change, or may even go up, you will be losing fat.
I think cardio is also good, and doing both cardio and resistance (weight) training in combination (not necessarily togther on any one day) is the foundation of a good balanced exercise program.
I also think that gaining muscle mass and losing fat is healthier than just losing fat, and that getting big is good (and sexy) on either a man or a woman.

Lol no one really answers your question girl. If you lift weights AND continue to eat as you are used to, of course you will lose weight since you are using up more calories than before. But, if your diet does not meet your requirements for muscle development you may not gain lean muscle mass.

Actually if you want to loose weight quicker you should start with cardio because it burns more calories at a faster rate and cardio exercises speed up your metabolisim so that when you do start with the weights you can continue to loose weight at the same rate plus build muscle mass.
