or we have to boil the water first before drinking ??

It is always good practise to boil the water before drinking it.

The tap water nowadays cannot be assumed to have only harmless minerals...

Do not drink any water from the tap in China. You must either boil it or treat it beforehand. You can get treatment at travel and ourdoor shops. Do not even use it to brush your teeth or clean food (unless the food is cooked afterwards.) It is pretty easy to buy bottled water in China so that is your best bet. Make sure the seal has not been broken on the bottled water though - people will take empty bottles, refill them with tap water, and then try to sell them. Most hotels will also leave a thurmose of boiled water at your door every morning for tea.

No, it isn't safe in some areas. It depends on where you are. I HIGHLY recommend you do NOT drink the water. It WILL give you digestive trouble, even if it is bacteria free.
