How will you keep it from rotting and infecting the wrapped product inside in the long run? Foil packaging has helped society keep food fresh for over periods of a year. It was a great idea that helped end starvation. If you mean to wrap someting up to take home, well than maybe. It would kill a banana tree to chop their leaves off to use as a wrapper, not to mention if we used them on a broader scale. Did you think about that?

Yes. If you are in India, you can find this is used in villages. first of all, you have to smoothen banana leaves by mild heating. It really becomes flexible, by which you can pack food. Being a leaf, it is the most healthy packing for food. I have used them myself.

if you travel to south america it is used frequently as such but remember the indiginous people also have resistance built up to many bacterias and are used to foods that are not refrigerated etc
I wouldn't trust it for a substitute. you won't have to wonder what you got sick from though

I don't know what you mean by "packaging".

You can definately serve food wrapped in bananna leaves, as people do in some tropical regions.
